Selection of Materials : Correspondence
The 300 letters we
hold were collected primarily for their signatures,
which led to a collection of greater breadth than
depth. So, though there are some sustained
conversations among these items, members of the
cabinet of every administration between Buchanan and
McKinley are represented in our holdings.
Other groups include Civil War generals and
soldiers, public figures and men of business, as
well as playwrights and stars of the late-19th-century
stage. The items below are but a few of the

Andrew Wilson, bugler in the 18th Pennsylvania
Cavalry. Most are from Wilson to his mother.
This one informs his parents that he has been
killed. Also included in these materials are
the buttons from his uniform, and a daguerreotype.
