Grading and policies
- Lectures:
It is strongly recommended that you read the assigned chapters BEFORE coming
to lecture. The lectures have been prepared with this assumption. I suggest
that you use the following strategy: skim the assigned chapter for main ideas
and then try to pick out 1 or 2 important concepts. Because you
probably haven't had this material before, you are not expected to understand
it on the first reading. The value in skimming the chapter first, is that you
will be able to have a better understanding of my emphasis of the text's
concepts.
- Grading:
- Make-up Exams: Make-up
quizzes will be given only after consultation with Prof. Linden. The only
acceptable excuses for missing an exam are illness with a medical excuse
from a medical physician -or- some event beyond your control which
compromised your studying for or attending class. If you miss a quiz
because you did not study enough, you will not be allowed to take a make-up;
you will receive 0 points as your score on the exam for missing the exam.
- Spot Questions: There
will be no make-ups of these questions for credit. They will occur
unannounced at the beginning of lecture.
- Grading Policy: Usually,
to receive an A-/A a student must earn 90% of the total course points. The
range of B grades is usually between 80-89%. The range of C grades is
usually between 66-79%. The range of D grades is usually between 51-65%.
And any student earning 50% or less of the course points will receive the
grade of F. Please note the use of the word USUALLY above. The professor
reserves the right to change this policy, if necessary. However, Dr. Linden
usually assigns grades based on the above scheme.
- Late Assignment Policy:
Any assignment turned in after the due date will receive less points than an
assignment turned in on time. Approximately 10% of the points of that
assignment will be taken off each day the assignment is late.
- Plagiarism/Cheating Policy:
Any assignment judged by Dr. Linden to have substantial similarity to
another student's work and/or previous student's work and/or other
materials* that are not the student's own work will receive an F.
Violations will be reported. Please see the Student Handbook for
college expectations.
* "other materials" includes information taken
from textbooks, journals, and the internet. All of these sources need
to be properly cited.
- Accommodations
for Learning and Physical Differences: If
you have specific physical or learning disabilities and require
accommodations, please let me know early in the semester so that your learning
needs may be appropriately met. You will need to provide documentation of
your disability to the Linda Whitney, Coordinator of Academic Support Services
or Diana Linden, (who is also an Educational/Learning Specialist at the CAE).
