Important Dates and Deadlines

Senior Colloquium - Mathematics 400 - Fall 2000

Below are the expected deadlines for the interim goals and final products.  If you are unable to meet a given deadline, you must submit to me and your faculty mentor in writing via email and by 5:00 p.m. the prior day a sound reason why you will not meet the deadline.  Note that some deadlines (noted in bold) are immutable.  Not meeting these few fixed deadlines may result in severe grade penalties or failure of the course (and failure to graduate this Spring).

Fall Semester Deadlines

September

Thursday, 8/31 Topic and Mentor Preference (JQ) (first round --- not a deadline).  Also, if you plan on graduating this Fall or if you are completing the Honors Program, you must inform me today.
Thursday, 9/7 Topic and Mentor Preference (JQ) due.  You must submit a "working title" which is descriptive of the work to be done, and you must include a paragraph summary of the ideas which will be explored.  In this paragraph, you should include the general area of mathematics this topic is in and some more specific details of the work you will do.  In a separate paragraph, you may include preferences for which mentor you would like to have.  Let me know if you have been talking with any faculty member(s) in selecting or refining your topic.  Note that you may not get the mentor of your choice.

October

Thursday, 10/12 Comps I Exam
Thursday, 10/26 Descriptive Comps Outline and Bibliography due.  The outline should be complete and detailed.  It should fully outline the entire paper which you expect as your final product.  Each point in your outline should be written as a complete sentence or at least a very detailed phrase.  By now you should have the full range of sources to be used in your work.  You must include complete bibliographic entries for each source.

November

Three weeks after Comps I returned, Comps I Rewrites due.
Thursday, 11/2 Presentation Date Requests due.
Tuesday, 11/21  Paper Draft #1 due.  The draft should basically represent a completed project, although there may be additional gaps to fill in during the revision process.  The paper should be written and presented in a formal and professional style as the final paper would be.  With exceptions for Honors papers or more extensive projects (which should be longer), the paper should probably be a minimum of ten pages.

Spring Semester Schedule
Talks begin in January

Spring Semester
schedule TBA
Oral Presentations You will be given further details on the evaluation criteria for the oral presentations.
At least two days prior to Oral Presentation --- Practice Talk(s) should be given.

February

Friday, 2/2
Paper Draft #2 due.  All the content of the project must now appear in the paper.  Revisions and rewriting may still be necessary, but there should not be missing sections or large gaps in this draft.  Again, the paper should be in a formal and professional style as the final paper would be, and should include an introduction, a full description of your work, a conclusion, and a complete bibliography.
Friday, 2/16 Final Paper Draft due.  Only minor revisions should be necessary based on this draft of the paper.

March

Friday, 3/16, 11:00 AM Papers due.  No exceptions to this due date will be given for any reason.  The paper will be graded based on what is received by this due date.  Failure to submit a paper by this date will result in a grade of "F" in Math 400.  You will be given further details on the evaluation criteria for the papers.
