Three sections: Sections 1 and 2 meet MWF 10:30 and 1:30, taught by myself, and Section3 meets MWF 9:30, taught by Professor Greg Tollisen. Students from all three sections are mixed in the lab sections. So we will be coordinating things so that the sections will stay close to each other.

Class Meetings: MWF 10:30-11:25 in Mosher 3, and MWF 1:30-2:25 in Mosher 2.

Textbook: Smith and Minton, Single Variable Calculus, second edition. We will cover most sections of Chapters 0-3 and 6. I will follow the textbook closely. I want you to be able to learn mathematics on your own by reading a book; so I will often require you to read a small portion of each section, without lecturing on it in class. You can of course ask me questions on the reading, in class and in office hours.

Homework: HW will be assigned every class day and posted on the class website, due the next class day. HW will be graded but will not count towards your grade; I won't even record the HW scores! Seems strange? I want HW to help you learn, not to help me evaluate you. Plus, this way you won't want to just write down the answers and get points; you'll want to learn how to do the problems.

Labs: Labs are not optional--you must enroll in a lab section. There are five sections: Mondays 2:30-3:55 FN 4; Tuesdays 10:00-11:25 FN 5, 1:30-2:55 FN 4, and 3:00-4:25 FN 4; and Thursdays 8:30-10:00 FN 5.

Gateway Exams: They test you on basic skills and concepts. You need to get at least 9/10 to pass. You may take each exam more than once, but must pass each one by these deadlines.

Midterms: We will have three midterms: Fri 9/24, Wed 10/20, and Fri 11/19 (in weeks 3, 7, 11). Changes to these dates, if any, will be announced ahead of time.

Final : The final exam will be on Monday December 13, 6:30-9:30 PM. Please make sure you do not have any exams or other plans (like travel plans) that conflict with this date and time; I do not give early or late finals.

Exam Make-ups: No make-up exams will be given. If you miss a midterm with a valid excuse (e.g., a medical reason), and provide documentation for it, that exam will simply not count for you—instead, all your other exams will count proportionally more. This policy does not apply to the final exam.

Extra Credit Problems: On each exam there may be one or more challenging problems designated as extra credit problems. They do not carry any points; but, in borderline cases, they may help you earn a higher grade.

Grading: I use a "curve" for grades, but in a small class such as ours, the curve will necessarily be somewhat subjective: I will determine it according to the overall performance of the class, the material covered, exams, homework, etc. But you are guaranteed a grade of at least A- for 90% or higher, B+ for 87% or higher, B for 83% or higher and so on (every ten points). A score of 95% or higher guarantees you an A. Your total number of points for the semester will be computed according to the table to the right.
Labs, Gateways 5%
Midterms 1, 2, 3 15%, 20%, 25%
Final 35%

Attendance: You are responsible for everything that goes on in every class meeting, such as announcements, handouts, taught topics that are not in the book, etc.  This means even if you miss a class for say a medical reason, it is your responsibility to contact me and find out what you missed.

E-mail: When necessary, I will make announcements via the class mailing list, instead of in the classroom. You are expected to check your email at least once a day. You are encouraged to use our class email list math114sec1-L@oxy.edu and math114sec2-L@oxy.edu  to send messages to everyone in the class.

Academic Honesty: I feel strongly about protecting honest and hard-working students against unfair and dishonest actions sometimes committed by a few. I don't give warnings; I refer all suspicious cases to the Judicial Examiner without hesitation.

Students with learning disability: you are welcome to see me and the CAE to arrange for any special needs.
