Dr. Annie Selden

I came to Tennessee Tech. Univ. in 1985 with my husband, Dr. John Selden, after teaching at several universities in the U.S. and abroad. I was substantive head of the Mathematics Department at Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria from 1983 to 1985 after John was elected Dean of Science and appointed Director of the Computer Center. My early research was in topological semigroups, but now it is in collegiate mathematics education, an area that combines mathematics with psychology. I spent the Fall semester of 1993 as a Visiting Scholar at U. C. Berkeley's Division of Education in Mathematics, Science, and Technology, and visited at the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRMSE) at San Diego State University during the year 1995-6. With John, I write the Research Sampler column, which reviews recent research in collegiate mathematics education. This appeared for seven years in UME Trends and now it is in the Teaching and Learning section of MAA Online.
