The
Hafner Brothers
The
Hafner brothers (from left to right: Dave, John, and Mark). The photo was
taken by Fernando Cervantes at his home in Mexico City in March
2005. We had just completed a very successful field-collecting
trip on Mexico's major volcanoes. The trip
commemorated the 30-year anniversary of our first professional
field-collecting trip with all 3 of us together (a trip to the Great
Basin in March 1975).
People
are often curious when they learn of the presence of three brothers
in biology, especially three brothers who are evolutionary
biologists working primarily on mammals. As a consequence, my brothers,
Mark and Dave, and I often find ourselves fielding questions about our
family background, our education, and our childhood experiences.
It's not appropriate here to delve into a lengthy biographical
accounting of the Hafner brothers (perhaps I'll do that elsewhere), but
I will provide a few brief details and the links to Mark's and
Dave's websites.
Mark
S. Hafner is the oldest brother and he is Professor and
Curator of Mammalogy at
Louisiana
State
University
. David J. Hafner is the youngest of the three of us and he is
Curator of Vertebrate Zoology, New Mexico Museum of Natural History. We are very
close in age (Mark's about 13 months older than me and Dave's about 18 months
younger than me), we're native Californians, and we have
always been very close personally and professionally.
