Two sections: This course has another section (MWF 8:30), taught by Professor Alan Kneorr. Students from the two sections are mixed in in the lab sections. So we will be coordinating things so that the two sections will stay close to each other. Feel free to seek help from Prof. Knoerr; his office hours are M 1:30-2:30, W 2:30-3:30, F 2:00-4:00.

Class Meetings: MWF 1:30-2:25, Mosher 2.

Text: Smith and Minton, Single Variable Calculus, second edition. We will cover most sections of Chapters 4-8. I will follow the text closely, so you should read it! To encourage you to learn how to learn mathematics on your own from a book, I will often require you to read a small portion of each section, without lecturing on it in class. You can of course ask me questions on the reading, in class and in office hours.

Homework: HW will be assigned every class day and posted on the class website, due the next class day. You are encouraged to work with others on HW; but you must write it up alone, in your own words. Copying is cheating, and I have zero tolerance for it. Doing mathematics is essential to learning mathematics. Think hard and patiently and don't give up when stuck on difficult problems. Take HW seriously, and expect to spend at least two hours on each assignment.

Labs: Labs are not optional. You must enroll in one of these three lab sections: M 3:30-4:55, T 10:00-11:25, T 1:30-2:55; they all meet in Fowler 127. Lab assignments will be due the day after the lab itself, and count towards the course grade.

Gateway Exams: Each counts as one lab assignment.

Quizzes: There will be a number of short in-class quizzes, announced ahead of time.

Midterms: There will be three midterms: Wed Feb 19th, Wed Mar 26th, and Wed Apr 16th. Changes to these dates, if any, will be announced ahead of time.

Final : The final exam will be on Friday May 9th, 6:30-9:30 PM. Please make sure you do not have any exams or other plans (including travel plans) that conflict with this date and time; I do not give early or late finals!

Make-ups:

Grading: Grades will be assigned on a curve. In a small class such as ours, the curve will necessarily be somewhat subjective: I will determine it according to the overall performance of the class, the material covered, exams, homework, etc. But you are guaranteed an A for a total of 93% or higher, an A- for 90% or higher, a B+ for 87% or higher, and so on, every ten points. Your total number of points for the semester will be computed according to the table to the right.
Homework 10%
Labs and Gateways 10%
Quizzes 5%
Midterms 45%
Final 30%

Attendance: You are responsible for everything that goes on in every class meeting, such as announcements, handouts, taught topics that are not in the book, etc.  This means even if you miss a class for say a medical reason, it is your responsibility to contact me and find out what you missed.

E-mail: When necessary, I will make announcements via the class mailing list, instead of in the classroom. You are expected to check your email at least once a day. You are encouraged to use our class email list math124sec2-L@oxy.edu to send messages to everyone in the class.

Academic Honesty: I feel strongly about protecting honest and hard-working students against unfair and dishonest actions sometimes committed by a few students. I don't give "warnings." I just refer all suspicious cases to the Judicial Examiner, without hesitation.

Students with learning disability: you are welcome to see me and the CTL to arrange for any special needs.
