Class Meetings: Section 1: 10:30-11:25 MWF, Fowler 301; Section 2: 1:30pm-2:25pm MWF, Johnson 101.
Labs: Five sections: Tuesdays: 8:00, 10:00, 1:30 (x2), 3:00. You may attend any of the five lab sections regardless of which lecture section you're in.
Textbook: Calculus (Early Transcendentals), Eighth Edition, by Anton, Bivens, and Davis. We will covers sections from Chapters 6, 7, 8, 10, including the following topics: Definite and indefinite integrals; Riemann sums; fundamental theorem of calculus; area, volume, arclength; integration by substitution and by parts (and maybe partial fractions); separable differential equations; infinite series: harmonic, geometric, and telescoping series; integral, ratio, root, and (limit) comparison tests; absolute and conditional convergence; Mclaurin and Taylor series; power series and radius of convergence.
Homework: HW assignments will be posted on our class website; please check the homework webpage everyday. Doing HW is essential to learning mathematics -- there is no way around it. You must take it seriously, and should expect to spend at least two to three hours on each assignment. I encourage you to work with your classmates and/or get help from me or the CAE on problems you can't do. But, to be honest with yourself, in the end write up your own work without looking at hints or solutions provided by others.
Midterms: We will have three midterms: Monday Feb 11
Wednesday Feb 13, Friday Mar 7 Wednesday Mar 5, Friday Apr
11 Wednesday Apr 9. Changes to these dates, if any, will be announced ahead of time.
Final : The final exam date and time is determined by the Registrar's Office (www.oxy.edu/Registrar.xml). Please check to make sure you do not have any time conflicts with this date and time (or any early travel plans); I do not give early or late finals.
Exam Make-ups: No make-up exams will be given. If you miss a midterm with a valid excuse (e.g., a medical reason), and provide documentation for it, that exam will simply not count for you -- instead, all your other exams will count proportionally more. This policy does not apply to the final exam.
Grading: Your grade for the semester will be computed according to this table: |
|
Attendance: You are responsible for everything that goes on in every class meeting, such as announcements, handouts, taught topics that are not in the book, etc. This means whenever you miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact me and find out what you missed.
E-mail: When necessary, I will make announcements via the class mailing list, instead of in the classroom. You are responsible for checking your email at least once a day. I encourage you to use our class email list math120sec1-L(at)oxydot.edu or math120sec2-L(at)oxydot.edu to contact others in class regarding homework questions or any class related issues.
Academic Honesty: I feel strongly about protecting honest and hard-working students against unfair and dishonest actions sometimes committed by a few. I don't give warnings; I refer all suspicious cases to the Judicial Examiner without hesitation.
Students with learning disability: Please see me and the CAE for any special arrangements.
