Two sections: This course has another section (MWF 2:30), taught by Professor Naiomi Cameron. Students from the two sections are mixed in the lab sections. So we will be coordinating things so that the two sections will stay close to each other..

Class Meetings: MWF 10:30-11:25, Mosher 2.

Text: Smith and Minton, Single Variable Calculus, second edition. We will cover most sections of Chapters 0-3 and 6. I will follow the text closely, so you should read it! I want you to be able to learn mathematics on your own by reading a book; so I will often require you to read a small portion of each section, without lecturing on it in class. You can of course ask me questions on the reading, in class and in office hours.

Homework: HW will be assigned every class day and posted on the class website, due the next class day. You are encouraged to work with others on HW; but you must write it up alone, in your own words. Copying is cheating, and I have no tolerance for it. Solving problems is essential to learning mathematics. Think hard and patiently; don't just give up when stuck on a difficult problem: come back to it after taking a break or doing other problems. If you work with friends (which I encourage you to) or get help to solve a problem, then later test yourself: a few hours or days later, get a blank sheet of paper, and see if you can solve the problem without looking at any notes or the book Take HW seriously, and expect to spend at least two hours on each assignment.

Labs: Labs are not optional--you must enroll in a lab section. There are four sections, all on Thursday: 8:30-9:55, 10:00-11:25, 1:30-2:55, and 3:00-4:25; they all meet in Fowler 112. Lab assignments are graded.

Gateway Exams: Each counts as one lab assignment. They test you on basic skills and concepts. You need to get at least 9/10 to pass. You may take each exam more than once, but must pass each one by these deadlines.

Quizzes: There will be a few short quizzes, announced ahead of time.

Midterms: There will be three midterms: Fri 9/26, Fri 10/24, and Mon 11/24. Changes to these dates, if any, will be announced ahead of time.

Final : The final exam will be on Friday December 12, 6:30-9:30 PM. Please make sure you do not have any exams or other plans (like travel plans) that conflict with this date and time; I do not give early or late finals!

HW and Exam Make-ups:

Extra Credit Problems: On each exam there may be one or more challenging problems designated as extra credit problems. They do not carry any points; but, in borderline cases, they may help you earn a higher grade.

Grading: I use a "curve" for grades, but in a small class such as ours, the curve will necessarily be somewhat subjective: I will determine it according to the overall performance of the class, the material covered, exams, homework, etc. But you are guaranteed a grade of at least A- for 90% or higher, B+ for 87% or higher, B for 83% or higher and so on (every ten points). A score of 95% or higher guarantees you an A. Your total number of points for the semester will be computed according to the table to the right.
Homework 10%
Labs and Gateways 5%
Quizzes 5%
Midterms 50%
Final 30%

Attendance: You are responsible for everything that goes on in every class meeting, such as announcements, handouts, taught topics that are not in the book, etc.  This means even if you miss a class for say a medical reason, it is your responsibility to contact me and find out what you missed.

E-mail: When necessary, I will make announcements via the class mailing list, instead of in the classroom. You are expected to check your email at least once a day. You are encouraged to use our class email list math110sec12-L@oxy.edu to send messages to everyone in the class.

Academic Honesty: I feel strongly about protecting honest and hard-working students against unfair and dishonest actions sometimes committed by a few. I don't give warnings; I refer all suspicious cases to the Judicial Examiner without hesitation.

Students with learning disability: you are welcome to see me and the CTL to arrange for any special needs.
