  (1) Ever lived abroad?
    Yes: where and how long?
No: where might you like to try living abroad?
  (2) Pick a country or two that has been in the international economics news lately and why
Misc

2. Me

3. The course

--Intl. Econ is my favorite subject
    Nothing more important
    Nothing more misunderstood by public
Always timely and constantly in the news

    --Analytical course: tools oriented
Institutional detail brought in as illustrations, but not central focus
    Why?
    1. Institutional detail changes / tools retain more lasting value
    2. Institutional detail is accessible w/o my help. Analytical tools require use to master

4. Strategy for notes Bring 2+ colors, I will too

5. Strategy for success: work together, preferably in an interdisciplinary study group

6. Like you, I am a student of international economics
I try to keep an open mind about the impacts of globalization
I am especially persuaded by concrete evidence and always willing to look for it
    So raise questions about...
        --what you hear about
--what you read in the news
--what you cover in other classes
Let's check it out and see what we can find out

Emphasize from syllabus: must complete all assignments
a.     Exam 1 date: Thu, 3/22, 5:00-7:00pm
    Exam 2 date:
Sat, 5/12, 8:30-10:30am
b. Short papers: you will choose a country--study its international economics; write two papers about your country
d. Problem sets and Participation
    (1) 6 total. Must be turned in on time. I drop lowest score and make optional as long as you turn in at least 5.
(2) Attendance and participation.
Tracking the news, bringing issues up for discussion can help the whole class.
There will be structured opportunities for that along the way too, since your papers and various other small and extra credit assignments are focused on a country that you choose to study.
(3) in-class activities: 3x5 cards / YouBet -- lottery off some prizes at end of term -- sometimes from readings

Co-curricular activities:
I must have relevant information right away

Learning disabilities--I am happy to accommodate documented learning disabilities

Common practice:
I will send you off with work to do to prepare for the next class.
Between classes: work on it together, some see me
In class: compare results and proceed from there.
Result: we can build on basic results in class, and you can work on underlying concepts at your own pace and according to your own learning style.

    --Course schedule:
Part 1: Markets and the global economy
Part 2: Governments and the global economy

    Basic story:
    1. The good news: gains > losses
    2. The bad news: prosperity for some, but hardship for others
    3. Governments can be part of the problem and can be part of the solution
