  Research paper

Your course paper assignment is to submit a journal article to the (hypothetical) Undergraduate Journal of International Economics (UJIE). UJIE is issued by the Economics Department of Occidental College, a nonprofit, tax-exempt educational institution. UJIE is dedicated to encouraging and communicating undergraduate economic research and analysis. Manuscripts for UJIE should fall within one of the following categories:
    International trade
    International trade policy
    International resource migration

Authors should submit three copies of their manuscripts to James D. Whitney, Editor. Submissions should be clear and concise. Manuscripts of more than 8 double-spaced pages will not be considered. Authors should keep in mind that our readers are undergraduates with principles-level preparation in international economic theory.

Rejected manuscripts will be returned to the author without review. All other manuscripts will be evaluated by two reviewers, and pertinent comments will be brought to the author's attention.

Manuscripts must be submitted no later than 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 11, 2001.

        Research paper tips

Sequence of events:
Step 1: Initial submission: Submit 3 copies of your initial paper.
Step 2: Peer review: I will distribute each paper to two classmates for peer review. Reviewers will have 5 days from the day I distribute an assigned paper to return their completed reports to me. You will each referee 2 papers and return 2 copies of each referee report to me. 20 percent of your paper grade will be based on the overall quality of your two referee reports. Referee suggestions should focus primarily on analysis, research and organization, with only brief comments about mechanics (if any comments about mechanics seem appropriate).
Step 3: Final submission: You will receive back the referees' suggestions about your paper within 7 days of the date you submit your initial draft. Your final submission is due at the start of the last day of class. You must turn in 2 copies of your final submission along with a cover letter addressed to the journal editor briefly describing how you responded to the main suggestions of your referees.
