Math 396/97: Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Modelling

This is not a regular class! The format of the class will be a year long seminar (2-credits each semester) which meets once a week for 90 minutes. The students will play an integral part in the presentation and understanding of the material.

The Fall edition is Math 397, a brand new Independent Study course called Applied Mathematics which will cover mathematical methods commonly found in Applied Mathematics such as dimensional analysis and perturbation methods. The text is Applied Mathematics (1997, 2nd Edition, Wiley-Interscience) by J. David Logan. The class will meet on Thursdays from 10:00am-11:30 in Fowler 301.

The Spring edition is Math 396, Mathematical Modelling, a course which has been in the Course Catalog for years and is an introduction to the art of applying mathematics to real world problems. The text will be Mathematical Models (1998, 1st Edition, SIAM) by Richard Haberman. The class will meet on Thursdays from 1:30-3:00pm.
