CSP 19: Gender, Race and Gay Rights in the Obama Era
Fall 2009

SECTION I: UNDERSTANDING IDENTITY: INTERSECTIONS OF GENDER, RACE & SEXUALITY

Paper #1: Hybrid Views of Justice

PROMPT AVAILABLE: Wednesday September 16th
PAPER DUE: Friday September 25th
REVISED VERSION DUE: Friday October 2nd

In a typed, double-spaced 3-4 page (800-1200 word) essay, please explore how the concepts we have been discussing in this section of the class (social constructs of gender, sex and race, intersectionality, mestiza consciousness, et cetera) have particular significance to your interpretation of the word "justice." Your paper should be a critical examination of these concepts as they speak to hybridity in your life and your identity formation. Note that while "hybridity" includes racial hybridity, it is not limited to race. In this regard, please be sure to contextualize the intersections of your particular cultural, ethnic, economic, national and/or sexual make-up in relation to how these constituencies (race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and nationality) inform the ways you identify (and/or are identified) personally, socially and politically and view the concept of "justice."
