Dear Professor:

As you know, the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and the Society of Actuaries (SOA) are moving forward with the implementation of new education systems starting in the year 2000.

The Joint CAS/SOA Working Group on Exam 1/Course 1 has completed its final report which includes a sample examination. This report and exam are enclosed. We hope that this early communication will assist you as you prepare course outlines that will follow the subject material established for this course.

The Joint CAS/SOA Working Group on Course 2 is working on its final report, which will include a sample examination. We will release the report as soon as the final report is available.

This Exam 1/Course 1 report will also be available shortly via the SOA's Internet site, http://www.soa.org or the CAS website, http://www.casact.org.

The SOA has established working groups for each new course in order to define learning objectives, syllabus material and create a sample examination. The SOA Board Task Force on Education and the Design Team anticipate releasing the final report from each of the respective working groups to you as they become available.

The CAS expects to make no changes in the syllabus for 1999. The Syllabus Committee has begun working on revised syllabus material for new Exams 3 through 9. The CAS will release a revised syllabus as soon as it is available.

Please feel free to direct any comments or questions you may have to the CAS or the SOA office.

Sincerely,

John J. Kollar
Chair, CAS Task Force on Education

Jeffrey Beckley
Chair, SOA Design Team
