  • I was born in China during the '90s. My mother had an abortion due to the one-child policy. I would have loved to have siblings, but I do think that the one-child policy was the right decision. It greatly alleviated China's rising population which put a strain on China's development and individuals' living standards. Even now, in the Western world, population growth is one of the biggest challenges facing the world. The UN has repeatedly stated over the past several years that the growth rate of the world's population must decrease to below the replacement level to achieve economic sustainability.

I'm not sure how I feel about people who flouted the law and had a second child. I realize that those people have probably have gone through hardships, but that was ultimately their own choice. If everyone flouted the law then China today would have a much lower per capita income due to the lack of resources available to each member of the population. Therefore, in a way, I feel that the ones who had more than one child took advantage of those who obeyed the law. It's like the people who drive in the HOV lanes without having passengers in the car.

Ultimately, I view the one-child policy as a burden that was shared by everyone in China for the greater good of the people.
