Fact: The Website -–local interfaces such as the home page, topics pages and research guide-- is stored on a local server at Occidental College. The digital archive --a database of digital images and records-- is stored in a digital storage and management system called Content DM hosted by OCLC in Ohio.

Tip: You can tell the difference between the local interfaces and the database by the banner at the top:

  • The local Website: Japanese American Relocation Collection

  • The database: Japanese American Relocation Collection Digital Archive

Tip: To navigate back from the database to the Website, use the Browser Back Arrow or Click on home on the upper tool bar.

Fact: The Website topics pages offer hot links to selected individual or a group of records in the database.

Fact:  The Search Archive link is located on the Website interfaces. Search Archive is a customized search page.

Tip: Use Search Archive for keyword and customized searching of the digital archive and as a link to the digital archive's Advanced Search.

Fact: The Advanced Search interface and functions are part of the database.

Tip: Advanced Search enables searching selected fields. When a field, such as title, is selected a corresponding show terms link appears for that field. Open show terms for suggested keywords.

Fact: Search and Browse results pages can be sorted alphabetically by Title.
Tip: Click on the heading to sort.

Fact: A description of the document, i.e. descriptive metadata, is located below single page documents.

Tip: Click on doc description located in the toolbar above the image of multiple page documents for the document’s descriptive metadata.

Tip: Descriptive metadata is organized in searchable data fields. Words and terms in searchable fields are hotlinked on single page documents.  Click on a hotlink to retrieve all documents with the same term in that data field.

Tip: Handwritten letters have been transcribed.  For single page documents, scroll down to read the transcribed text.  For multiple page documents, click on page & text in the upper toolbar to read the transcript.

Tip: Use Zoom & Pan for closer inspection of documents or photos.

Tip: Copies of documents can be selected and saved using My favorites.

Tip: Help on the toolbar provides more guidance on database screen views, search tools and My favorites.
