 Deadlines

We will negotiate these deadlines (and add other progress check points) as we move through the semester.  But this will give you a sense of how you should be making progress through the semester, and into next semester.

 

Deadline Task

Fall 2015

August 27
No class meeting.
September 3 First class meeting. Introductions and explanation of Comps Options for 2015-16 academic year.
September 10 No class meeting
September 17 Complete Math 400 Survey before class.

Bring one
paragraph summary of your Comps Topic along with your selection of Comps Option and list of preferences for Comps Advisor.

Be prepared to speak for 1-2 minutes about your proposed topic(s).
September 24
No class meeting.
October 1
Comps Project Project proposals (1-3 pages) due by 3pm. (Submit by email.)

Project Proposals must answer:
0) Who is your Comps Advisor?
1) What is the title?
2) What is the abstract (100-word paragraph summary)?
3) Include your source material (in PDF)
4) What are the advanced mathematical topics and ideas to be used and explained in the paper or talk?
5) What course work have you taken that prepares you for this topic?

Proposals should include an outline of work to be completed.

October 8
Class Meeting.

Comps Oral Presentation by Sam Stekol "Falling Through a Hole in the Earth"
October 15 Comprehensives Exam (Part 1) 3-6pm in Fowler 309.
October 22 Class meeting. We will go and meet with the Career Resources Center from 3:15-4:15. Information on Careers for Math Majors.

Comps Proposals returned with feedback and Comps Paper Grading Rubric distributed.

October 29 No class meeting.
YOU SHOULD BE MEETING WITH COMPS ADVISORS WEEKLY AND CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR MENTOR LOG ON GOOGLEDOCS.
November 5
No class meeting. (Buckmire out of town)
November 12 Class meeting. Check-in on progress towards your penultimate draft. Bring in early drafts for group peer review.

You should have your 100-word abstracts ready for submission on this date.
November 19 Complete Penultimate Draft of Paper due to Me (and Advisors) in hard copy form.
All drafts must have
0) A meaningful title
1) 100-word abstract
2) Works cited/Reference page (with multiple sources)
3) Thesis sentence/summary of main idea or result bolded in the introductory paragraph
4) Be at least 5 single-spaced pages long (no more than 20).

Honors Comps Oral Presentation by Jesse Kreger "A Survey Of Mathematical Models of Epidermal Wound Healing"
December 3 Oral Comps Presentations in Mathematics by Andrew Clarey, Kaleb Mitchell, Hana Mizuno and Olivia Smith.
December 10
Final Draft of Comps Paper due To Me (and Advisors) by 5pm by email.

Before Spring Break
Senior Comprehensives Talks will be conducted in 4 consecutive weeks on Thursdays 4:30-6pm in Fowler 302.
All Senior and Junior Math majors must attend all talks.
