Description
French 201 is an intensive second-year course. Consistent with department and Occidental College policy, the primary focus of the course will be to develop cross-cultural understanding. You will avail yourself of readings and audiovisual documents, you will complete written and oral assignments, and you will participate in class discussions in order to refine your communicative and cultural skills. The ultimate goal of this course is therefore to help you perfect your basic command of the structure of French while in the process of becoming familiar with some important aspects of contemporary French culture. The course meets the CORE group 6 requirement and is the first requirement for the French minor; typically, however, nearly all students go on to higher level courses either to fulfill the DWA requirement, to study abroad, or to minor/major in French. All students are advised to enroll simultaneously this semester in the one-credit, non-graded Intermediate French Conversation course (French 151)
After the successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- carry on a conversation or participate in a discussion with native speakers (asking and responding to questions about personal information and on academic subjects).
- understand written and spoken texts in French on topics of general interest and on the history, politics, and arts of France.
- develop cross-cultural awareness
- use materials written in French in courses taken in other departments at Oxy.
